Welcome the website of the New Zealand Dystonia Patient Network

The Dystonia Patient Network aims to promote awareness of movement disorders for the expressed goal of early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and patient support by:

  • Supporting dystonia patients with information, advice and networking opportunities.
  • Increasing awareness about dystonia both among the medical community and the general public.
  • Encouraging and facilitating research with the aim of seeking better treatments, prevention and care.

What is dystonia?

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions, which force certain parts of the body into abnormal movements or postures. Dystonia can affect any part of the body including the arms and legs, trunk, neck, eyelids, face, or vocal cords. It is often excruciatingly painful.
